How do we manage risk?
A Four-Tiered System.
-
Our Students
We believe the best way to avoid accidents is to prevent them. Through orientation safety chats and specialized safety chats for each activity, we believe empowering our students is the best way to avoid accidents and injury.
We encourage students to ask questions, ensure they only opt for ‘Challenge by Choice’ activities and not push themselves into uncomfortable situations. There is a fine line between doing something slightly out of your comfort zone to grow and being peer-pressured into an activity you are not comfortable doing. Our program leaders recognize this difference by evoking the ‘Challenge by Choice’ principle from Alive Outdoors.
-
Instructors
Our program leaders are highly trained professionals who take safety seriously. They understand the importance of creating a safe learning environment for all students and are committed to implementing best practices in safety training. Our program leaders are equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle any situation that may arise.
As a requirement, all of our hands-on program leaders have, at the minimum, their basic first aid. Most of our instructors are additionally certified surf instructors, wilderness first responders, oxygen providers, and/or have completed specific at-sea safety training (i.e. CPR-C, STCW-95, Marine First Aid etc.)
-
Local Support
Kuta Lombok has plenty of local clinics, doctors, and a hospital that can handle any sudden medical emergencies. Our program leaders are familiar with these clinics and visit them prior to the program.
The doctors and nurses at the Blue Island Clinic are highly trained professionals who prioritize their patients' needs. The facilities are kept clean and well-maintained, and the equipment is up-to-date and reliable.
-
International Support
As part of our commitment to providing the best possible care for our students, we have access to doctors 24/7. Our on-call doctors, available 24/7 from Canada and Australia, are ready to provide second opinions at any time.
Our goal is to ensure that every program leader and student feels supported and cared for, and we believe that providing access to round-the-clock medical advice is an important step toward achieving that goal.
Risk Management Plans
-
Swimming
Swimming is a core component of our programs. Pool and ocean safety is our highest priority, and it is essential that students feel empowered, knowledgeable, safe, and trusting of our program leaders.
All of our students complete a mandatory Ocean Safety Program provided by Buffalo Pond Swim School in the pool and in a controlled ocean environment prior to the program. We also follow the standardized AUST Swim Curriciulum and ensure all students can demonstrate life-saving techniques such as floating and emergency backstroke prior to program.
Our program leaders undergo ocean safety training before the program, and our team includes an Emergency First Responder instructor, Oxygen Provider, Wilderness First Responder, Dive Instructor, Rescue Diver, and Canadian-endorsed Captain.
-
Medical Aid/Illnesses
When working in a tropical environment, there are potential risks to consider.
We conduct daily health check-ins to address any concerns, questions, or symptoms that students may have.
Our volunteer staff are highly trained and capable of handling any medical issues that may occur. All program leaders have, at minimum, their CPR-C and basic first aid. If necessary, they can refer students to local clinics or our on-call doctor service for further assistance.
-
Surfing
Our safety mitigation plans for surfing risks, including reef scrapes, collisions, and currents, are thoroughly explained to all students in their native language, prior to each surfing session.
Our program leaders are well-prepared to educate, prevent, and address any incidents that may occur.
-
Boating
Our boating safety plans are comprehensive and include various measures such as emergency action plans, weather forecasting, clearly defined crew duties, and communication plans.
We prioritize caution and safety, and if any crew member feels uncomfortable, we adjust our plans accordingly. Our aim is to minimize risks and provide an enjoyable and safe sailing experience. Always keep in mind that safety should be the utmost priority when out on the water.
